Buddy and Dale
June 19th, 2009 by Jeff Pearlman
While doing some research at the Sports Illustrated library the other day, I stumbled upon the below box—which I absolutely love. Although I certainly don’t remember the game, how can one not appreciate the fact that, in the course of a single afternoon in 1987, Dale Berra (lifetime average: .236) started at short, then was replaced mid-game by Buddy Biancalana (lifetime average: 205)?
I challenge any baseball historians to come up with a game where two more feeble players manned a single position.
Amazing.
