Breakdown: Canseco arrived in Boston in 1995 and almost immediately introduced many of his teammates to the wonders of performance-enhancing drugs. Mocked by the media but embraced by teammates, Canseco was a seemingly harmless guy who, truth be told, did great harm. Now better known for his book, “Juiced,” than his athletic accomplishments.

From The Rocket That Fell to Earth: By September 1985, he was in the majors with the A’s, and the following year, he totaled 33 home runs, 117 RBIs and 15 steals en route to winning the American League Rookie of the Year award. Within the tight lipped world of the major leagues, Canseco served as the first walking, talking, breathing, hitting pro steroids billboard. In Oakland and then in Texas, he told anyone and everyone that steroids and human growth hormone could turn even an average ballplayer into Babe Ruth. Now, in Boston, he was spreading the exact same message.

To the media, Red Sox players praised Canseco’s talent and dedication, even though his secret formula for success was well known within the clubhouse. “I still remember the first conversation Jose and I had about steroids,” says Mike Greenwell, the veteran Boston outfielder. “I think I had just gotten my third hit of the day, and Jose said, ‘Dude, I sure wish I could hit like you.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, but I wish I had your power.’ ”

That’s when Canseco smiled, flexed a bicep and said, “Greenie, if you come down to Miami after the season we can work on that.” Later, on the bus ride to the team’s hotel, Canseco elaborated. “A lot of my power comes from steroids,” he told Greenwell. “And your power can come from it, too. It’s all over the place.”

Greenwell wasn’t interested. “Just didn’t seem right,” he says. “I believe in integrity.”
