JEFF PEARLMAN

Winged freak? Terrorize? Wait’ll they get a load of me.

So I finally, at long last, saw “The Dark Knight” today. For, oh, 1 1/2 months now, all I’ve heard is that this is the greatest superhero movie ever; that it’s an amazing merging of effects and plot; that Heath Ledger is dazzling; etc.

My reaction: Eh.

The movie was very good, and Ledger was—factually—extraordinary. At least 10,000 times better than Jack Nicholson in the same role two decades ago. But there was just something missing. The thing went on about 25 minutes too long, and I’m not a big Bale fan. He brings little emotion to the gig; is a far cry from the near-perfect Michael Keaton.

Grade: B
