… for sending him on the wrong course down History Lane. Win or lose this election, McCain could have gone down as a truly great senatorâ€”an independently minded man who, by most accounts, was willing to stand up for what he believed in, party lines be damned.
From this vantage point, it’s incredibly sad. The people who ran Bush’s 2000 destruction of McCain are now instructing him to try the same techniques with Barack Obama. Bush, as most of the nation now realizes, is a tool; a pliable, pathetic lemming of a man who lacks backbone and a moral compass. But that’s not how I viewed McCainâ€”until recently.
Yeah, maybe he would have lost righteouslyâ€”but at least it wouldn’t have damned his reputation. Now, when I think of John McCain, I’ll think of Lee Atwater and Karl Rove and Jesse Helms. That’s sad, sad company …
