JEFF PEARLMAN

Oy. The sports writer.

Was reading today how sports writers were in a tizzy at the Fiesta Bowl, because Ohio State’s freshman quarterback was unavailable for Media Day.

This perfectly illustrates why I am generally happy no longer covering events.

When I was in my early-to-mid 20s and working for Sports Illustrated, the majority of athletes—college and pro—were in my age range. I could tolerate being blown off by, oh, Arthur Rhodes, because at least he wasn’t in diapers when I was receiving my high school diploma. But now, at age 36, the last thing I need, ego-wise, is to be chasing down kiddies to seek out their thoughts on the 3-4 defense or so-and-so’s trash talk. It just seems so undignified, and also sooooooo not fun.
