Almost forgot this. Maybe 12 years ago I was in Seattle doing a piece on the Mariners. Some rep from a company was cruising the clubhouse, handing the players free pairs of snazzy sunglasses. Ken Griffey, Jr. smiled, grabbed a couple of pairs, then turned back toward the media gathered around his locker.
“Like I always say,” he laughed. “If it’s free, it’s for me, and I’ll take three.”
I’ve recited that quote dozens of times. Love it.
