I’m an NRA member

Really, I am. A couple of years ago I wanted to spend a year as a pro-gun zealot, then write a book about it. The idea sort of fell flat (Does the world need a watered-down A.J. Jacobs?), so now I’m just a liberal sports guy receiving NRA mailings. Which, if you think about it, is sorta funny.

Today’s mail arrived, and the package included an orange post card reading LEGISLATIVE ALERT on the front in large letters. The back has a headline: SENATE GUN CONTROL BILL COULD BAN ALL SEMI-AUTOMATIC HANDGUNS IN NEW YORK!

To which I, NRA member, say: Fucking yeah!

According to this mailing, “The bill would require all semi-automatic handguns delivered to any licensed firearms dealer in New York to mechanically stamp certain information about the firearm (such as make, model and serial number) into the cartridge case when the gun is discharged. This bill does not exempt models currently available, making all of these guns illegal for sale … blah, blah, blah …”

The lierature goes on to explain that Micro-stamping is unproven and “potentially puts other gun owners at risk of prosecution since criminals will no doubt collect fired brass from shooting ranges to leave at crime scenes.”

I mean, seriously. Is this the best the NRA has? The law is bad, because criminals will set up law-abiding citizens, thus resulting in innocents going to jail? That’s your best take? Your best shot? Either the NRA’s members are severely dumb and believe this shit (ding!) or the NRA is desperate (ding!).
