For some odd reason I found myself on the BoyzIIMen website today. It’s a pretty sad place—hasn’t been updated in 11 months, which means the “big” 20th anniversary celebration probably wasn’t so big. Sigh.
I can’t say I was particularly shocked by the news that the group’s bass singer isn’t returning, because—truth be told—who knew BoyzIIMen still existed? What I did find shocking was:
A. The way the writer of this letter just sold the poor guy down the river.
B. The jarring lack of proper grammar and punctuation.
Seriously, these guys are paid to express themselves—and they don’t even have a proofer check over the stuff pasted on their website (“Which was more than fare”?)? What are the 43 remaining BIIM fans thinking?
As much as it pains me to have to deliver this information, we feel it’s important not to leave our fans hanging on this idea for much longer.
As many of you know and have known for many years, the bass singer of the group (Mike Mc Cary) left due to a nagging back ailment (as well as many other reasons). Over the last 6 months we’ve been in more recent contact with him checking to see how he was doing health-wise, as well as trying to feel out where he was in his life mentally, as it pertained to his career.
Well, on the eve of the 20th anniversary year of Boyz II Men, our negotiations to make Mike a part of this celebration are at a stalemate. What we were willing to offer him (which was more then fare for being gone for 7 years) verses what he wanted was so far a part that we’ve decided to carry on without him……………………again.
Our die-hard fans have struggled together with us for the past 7 years when no one would give us a gig or even a call back…….. you guys were there….and we thank you for that. We say that because these were the most trying 7 years of our lives as well as our careers. We could have easily packed it in and said “Well we had a good run so let’s turn off the lights and go home now”, but we didn’t. The three of us have fought together and continue to fight daily to keep the integrity of the name Boyz II Men. Not just because it pays us, but because there are millions of people around the world who depend on us everyday (musically) to help them through many of the hardships they face in their lives. It’s always easy to stay together when things are going great, but we all know that it takes a different kind of man to stay and fight it out when things are really bad.
So what we have here is 3 guys who are willing to do whatever it takes to fight for this institution we call Boyz II Men. It hurts me more then you know to sit and write this post knowing how bad I personally wanted to see this happen for the 60 million Boyz II Men fans around the world, but we can’t sugar-coat this situation any more. There WILL definitely be a 20th Anniversary Celebration but it will be without Mike Mc Cary. We’ve done what we could as friends, as brothers, as a family and as businessmen to try and make this thing work but It’s just not in the cards for Mike to be back in this group. We have all grown too far apart during his absence to risk our fans not getting what they have come to know and love over the passed 7 years from which is now……
