One of my favorite people in the sports world is A.J. Daulerio, Deadspin’s editor. A.J. is a terrific guy, and his site is truly fantastic. I’ve never had anything bad to say about the man, and I still don’t.
That said …
A few days ago Deadspin ran the now-infamous footage of Rex Ryan and his wife’s foot-fetish videos. Here’s the link. I get why A.J. ran it, and I get why the mainstream media followed along (We always follow along). What I don’t like—I mean, what I really don’t like—is the intent of the whole thing, which was solely to embarrass two people who, when you think about it, did nothing wrong and nothing especially scandalous.
I don’t have a foot fetish. When I was a kid my mom always used to say, “Feet are so ugly,” and I guess it rubbed off on me—because I share the belief (and my feet are truly hideous). But if I did have a foot fetish, well, what would the big deal be? I know plenty of men who have breast and ass fetishes, and nobody seems to make much of those. Rex Ryan digs his wife’s footsies? Whoop dee damn doo. But suddenly, because it’s THE Rex Ryan and because we’re all bored with our own pathetic lives, it becomes news. Big news. The news.
Again, I get it. Deadspin is a sports/gossip site, and this is sports/gossip. I suppose I’m simply tired of what we (myself too often included) have become in the sports media—gossip chasing schoolboys looking for the next kid to pick on.
