USFL Trivia Contest

So I have a USFL book coming out next year. Because of the entire reporting/writing odyssey, I’d argue I know more about the league than, oh, 99.99999 percent of society.

Sometimes, however, I’m surprised.

For no particular reason, here’s the first-ever jeffpearlman.com USFL trivia challenge. Answer the 10 questions below, e-mail them to anngold22@gmail.com or DM me @jeffpearlman on Twitter. The first person to get them all correct wins signed copies of Gunslinger and Showtime. Plus, for kicks and giggles, I’ll throw your name into the ACKNOWLEDGMENTS section of the USFL book (out Fall 2018).

Think you know your stuff?

Bring it …

• 1. We’ll start easy. A bunch of USFL teams transitioned into other teams. So who did the Washington Federals, the Michigan Panthers and the Oklahoma Outlaws ultimately become?

• 2. Who is the quarterback in this photo? And who is the halfback?

• 3. Name the New Jersey Generals owner who signed Herschel Walker in 1983.

• 4. Steve Young is the Los Angeles Express’ all-time leading passer. Before he arrived, the team’s two best quarterbacks were graduates of USC and UCLA. Who were they?

• 5. A USFL team featured two Heisman Trophy-winning halfbacks in the same backfield. What was the team, and who were the players?

• 6. The first-ever USFL game featured Chicago visiting Washington. The Federals featured a former NFL lineman in his 40s (he was listed slightly younger—a lie) who had also played for the Redskins. Who was this man?

• 7. Name the Houston Gamblers wide receiver who was the Southwest Conference 100-meter champion in college at Rice.

• 8. Match the former NFL quarterback with his primary USFL team …

Vince Evans ……………………………………………. Boston Breakers

Bobby Scott ……………………………………………. Arizona Wranglers

Cliff Stoudt ……………………………………………. Philadelphia Stars

Chuck Fusina ……………………………………………. Washington Federals

Matt Robinson ……………………………………………. Chicago Blitz

Johnnie Walton ……………………………………………. Birmingham Stallions

Joe Gilliam ……………………………………………. Oklahoma Outlaws

Doug Williams ……………………………………………. Portland Breakers

Greg Landry ……………………………………………. New Jersey Generals

• 9. Name the four USFL players who wound up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

• 10. Burt Reynolds was a part owner of the Tampa Bay Bandits. What celebrity was a part owner of the Los Angeles Express?
