Joan Pearlman, my mother, attended a reunion of people who lived in my hometown of Mahopac, N.Y. Here’s her report, exclusively for jeffpearlman.com …
There’s nothing like going to a reunion of folks who’ve resided in Mahopac, N.Y. in the past, and some who continue to have homes there.
Our only commonality is having resided in that small town in Putnam County at one time or another. We were to meet at a fun type of bar/restaurant called the The Square Grouper, on the water in Jupiter, Fla. Initially, we did not know who to look for, but eventually located the group. And what a fun bunch they were!
Most were childhood friends who grew up together in Yonkers, N.Y., then eventually moved up to what was then rural Putnam County. Don Smith and his wife, Eileen resided on Kings Ridge until 1967, and relocated to Florida in 1972. Don was known as a stickball player in Yonkers. Then there’s Al Shikaly, a musician, who now resides in Vero Beach. Bobby O’Donnell, a 1969 Yonkers High School grad, is a Mahopacian as well. Jim Walsh, Don Smith’s brother-in-law, has been married for 43 years and exclaims “Go Navy!”
Those listed are but a small segment of the raucous group who enjoy getting together yearly to rejoice and reminisce.
A fun time was had by all.
