Attended last night’s riveting Siena-Iona men’s basketball game in New Rochelle, N.Y. Game was pretty bad, but one moment stood out. During a break a fan was escorted to half-court to try and make a shot. The odds of success are probably, oh, 1 in 800 or so, and the prizes for such achievements can range from a new car to two airline tickets to a Foot Locker shopping spree.

“If Kevin makes this shot,” the announcer bellowed, “he wins a free night at the Stamford Holiday Inn!”

Alas, Kevin missed—but won. He was given a T-shirt instead.

  1. This reminds me of how, in the early ’90s, my brother was the lucky fan at a Columbia hoops game who got to enter the halftime contest. The challenge: hit a layup, a free throw, a three-pointer and a half-court shot in 30 seconds. He made it! (Needed two tries at both the three and the halfcourt shot.) His prize? No, not a pair of airline tickets, but a free sandwich at the local deli. Even sadder — I think he was THRILLED with the prize.
