Tsunami at its most ferocious

For far too many Americans, if it doesn’t happen here in the United States, it doesn’t happen.

Watch this.

I’ve never seen a video like the one above. It was taken the moment the tsunami swamped Kesennuma, and has been broadcast on Japanese television. For a second, put down your mug; turn off your iPad; step away from the freezer. Just imagine being there. Watching the cars float away. Then the trucks. Then the buildings. Everything you worked for—gone.

Like that.

  1. I’ve been paying attention.
There is a fault off the Oregon coast that slips big time once every 500 years or so.
It is estimated that a 9.0 quake is very likely.
I was in the SF bay area when the Earthquake hit during the World Series, in 1989. I witnessed the massive destruction. I saw massive freeway structures condemned.
Then I went home and saw the pencil thin supports holding our structures up. There were no earthquake standards on buildings or anything else.
Things have gotten better but we are far from prepared.
Japan is one of the most prepared countries in the world.
We will have a massive earthquake on the west coast. When it happens the devastation will be massive.

Two images stick out for me during this tragedy.

    This poor girl crying, http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2011/03/13/world/asia/20110313_JAPAN-slide-7B55/20110313_JAPAN-slide-7B55-jumbo.jpg

I want to put a blanket over her shoulders, hug her, and tell her it will be all right.
It is hard to imagine everything she must feel right now. I feel like crying with her.

  2. Having listened to several WWII vets spout vitriol against the Japanese because of Pearl Harbor I cannot help but be reminded that Governments not people go to war. It is my duty to donate to legitimate organizations that will try to help those poor people. I regret that my prayers are the only other thing I have to offer
