Amazing thing happened.
So I was recruited by the Clemson track and field coach to come run for the school. My times weren’t quite up to the program’s caliber, but the coach told me I was on the verge; that he loved my growth potential and my kick; that he wanted me to come to South Carolina and join the program.
I went for a visit with a bunch of other runners from across the nation. One young sprinter was transferring from Manhattanville College. “Oh,” I said, “I used to teach there!” We hugged.
There was some sort of press conference, and a big JEFF PEARLMAN sign. My parents were there, as was my wife and the kids, too. I was handed an orange running singlet and called to the front of the room. “We can’t wait to have you running for us,” the coach said.
It was one of the greatest moments of my life.
Then, at about 8 o’clock this morning, I woke up.
My back hurts.
I was genuinely sad.
