So earlier today Mike Organ, my friend and former Tennessean colleague, posted the above image on his Facebook page. It’s my first business card, from back in 1994. It has a hole in it. Shit happens.
I worked in the Living Department. Which is different from the Dead Department. In the Living Department we covered features—so music, arts, entertainment, etc. My first gig was as the paper’s food and fashion writer. Which is funny, because I could have known more focusing on Ethiopian wood carvings and the music of DC Talk.
I digress.
Back in the day, business cards were huge deals. Especially to young men and women tackling their first gigs. I remember being given a box of 500, thinking, “Holy shit! I’ve made it!” I handed them out to everyone I knew, which means everyone I knew had a moment of throwing JEFF PEARLMAN LIVING DEPARTMENT business cards into a trash can. Probably within 24 hours of reception.
Anyhow, I haven’t had a business card since 2003, when I left Newsday.
Such is life.
