Back in 1996 I was offered a job by Sports Illustrated.
I’d been writing for The Tennessean, and we were good, but I wanted to bring my best to the best. So I joined SI, and we did it! We were the best sports magazine in the world! I helped Rick Reilly and Steve Rushin and William Nack and Richard Hoffer and Gary Smith become the greatest sports magazine in the world!
And, eh, sure—they were coming off a year in which they published, um, the best sports magazine in the world! But then I arrived! I brought my A game! And we did it! We did it! My hard work did it! I carried SI to the next level! Which, well, was the same level it had been at before I showed up! But we did it! We did it! I knew we could do it! It’s all about hard work, baby! And dreaming!
We did it!
We did it!
