So I’m the 100 millionth American to love Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” and probably the 100 millionth American to find it ludicrously insulting that Billboard refuses to classify the tune as “country.”
First, it is country. Second, why can’t disparate genres mix? Third, does this have to do with race and racial expectations?
Whatever the case and whatever the reason, Lil Nas X fired back in a huge way earlier today, releasing a remix version of “Old Town Road” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus. And while that might sound, um, terrible (Google: Achy. Breaky. Heart.), it’s actually just the opposite. Cyrus brings life to an already hot song, much the same way (but sorta reverse) Nelly took Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” and lifted it from meh to electric.
I have no idea how Billboard will respond. But here’s the new version—and it is, without question, country …
